It was in May of 2025 that my wife and I visited Ljubljana. We landed in the evening. We had arranged for a taxi through our hotel to pick us up from the airport. It worked out perfectly. To learn more about us click here.

As soon as we checked into our hotel, we stepped out to explore the neighborhood. Since we were staying just minutes away from Prešeren Square, which is the main square, and the Triple Bridge, it didn’t take long to find ourselves in the heart of the old town.

The city feels laid-back, open, and full of life, and it’s also so easy to get around as it’s a walkable city with river views everywhere.

I love how green it is, thanks in part to beautiful spaces like Tivoli Park and the many leafy squares right in the heart of town.

Whether you want to explore its distinctive architecture, check out big sights, or just enjoy the relaxed vibe and food scene, I’ve got you covered.

I’m a huge fan of the walking tours. Whenever we can, we try to book a free Walking Tour. Usually, it’s with Guru Walking Tours. It’s a great way to get introduced to the city. The guides are always wonderful, and you can get great tips and recommendations from them.

We did a really interesting one with Guru Tours called Tito’s Communist Ljubljana. I highly recommend it. The guide was awesome, and we learnt so much. I highly recommend it.

Ljubljana Castle is a must-see on any list of things to do in Ljubljana, especially for first-time visitors eager for iconic city views and a glimpse into the rich history of Slovenia’s capital.

Discover Culture & History

Dive deeper into Slovenia’s heritage, art, and alternative culture.

National Gallery of Slovenia

This elegant gallery is a must for art lovers, but even if you’re not a museum person, it’s worth stepping inside. The collection spans medieval religious art, Baroque masterpieces, and modern Slovenian works, all beautifully displayed in a grand historic building.

It’s the kind of place where you can spend an hour or two soaking in Slovenia’s cultural heritage—and it’s a great way to slow down and enjoy a quieter side of Ljubljana.

Slovenian Ethnographic Museum

Want to really understand Slovenian culture? This museum is like a window into the country’s soul. Through traditional costumes, crafts, tools, and stories, you’ll learn how people lived across Slovenia’s diverse regions.

The exhibits are interactive and engaging, making it great for all ages. By the time you leave, you’ll feel like you’ve connected with Slovenia on a much deeper level.

Metelkova Art Center

To experience where art and freedom collide in Ljubljana, a visit to Metelkova Mesto is a must. It’s a little offbeat.

This former army barracks turned vibrant art squat is adorned with bold street art, intriguing sculptures, and eclectic installations. The first time you walk through, you feel like you’ve stepped onto a movie set—every corner bursting with graffiti, mosaics, and imaginative metalwork.

Highlights of Metelkova Mesto include:

  • Street art all around: It’s like wandering through a living gallery, constantly refreshed with new murals and creations.
  • Nightlife that never quits: Music clubs, bars, and event venues showcase everything from punk concerts to DJ nights and poetry slams.
  • Welcoming, open vibe: Visitors are free to explore, take photos, or just relax and absorb the unique atmosphere.

Butcher’s Bridge

Quirky and fun, Butcher’s Bridge is one of Ljubljana’s modern additions. It’s famous for the love locks couples attach to its railings, but what makes it stand out are the unusual bronze sculptures lining the bridge—slightly surreal and thought-provoking, yet oddly fitting for this artsy city.

It’s just a short walk from the Central Market, so it’s easy to add to your stroll along the river.

Enjoy Outdoor Spaces

Relax, stroll, and soak up the city’s natural beauty.

Tivoli Park

If you need a break from sightseeing, Tivoli Park is where the locals go to breathe. It’s Ljubljana’s biggest and most beloved green space, stretching right from the city center into the rolling hills.

You can easily spend a couple of hours wandering here, and the best part is—it feels like you’ve stepped into nature without leaving the city at all.

The park has wide tree-lined avenues that are perfect for a lazy stroll, a morning jog, or even renting a bike. Along the way, you’ll spot flower gardens, fountains, and charming statues scattered throughout the grounds.

Art lovers will be pleasantly surprised too—there’s often an open-air photo exhibition along the main promenade, which makes your walk even more interesting.

If you’re in the mood for something more relaxing, pack a picnic or just stretch out on the grass with a book—Tivoli is a local favorite for doing exactly that.

Families love the playgrounds, and if you wander deeper into the park, you’ll find wooded trails that feel almost like a mini-escape into the countryside.

And of course, no visit is complete without a quick stop at Tivoli Café, a charming little spot where you can grab a coffee, a slice of cake, or a refreshing drink. Sitting outside on a sunny afternoon with views of the park all around you is pure bliss.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful pause in your sightseeing, a chance to people-watch, or simply a dose of fresh air, Tivoli Park is a spot you won’t want to miss.

Ljubljanica River Cruise

There’s something magical about seeing Ljubljana from the water. The Ljubljanica River winds through the heart of the city, and a 30-minute boat cruise lets you see it from a completely different angle. Drift past historic buildings, cross under the city’s famous bridges, and listen to stories about the city’s past.

For something extra special, take a sunset or evening cruise—the reflections of lights shimmering on the river make Ljubljana look even more romantic.

Eat and Drink Like a Local

Ljubljana Street Food

Street food in Ljubljana is delicious, quick, and budget-friendly. Don’t miss burek, a flaky pastry filled with meat, cheese, or spinach, which is a favorite among locals. My wife and I loved it too, and couldn’t get enough of it.

Burek Ljubljana is a popular spot, but you can find smaller stalls along the river or near the Old Town.

Ajda was another of our favourite spots – the food was always delicious, and every time we went, we were greeted with a warm smile. By the way, you’ll love the people of Slovenia. They’re very friendly.

Other must-tries include local sandwiches, pastries, and seasonal snacks from small cafés. Street food is the perfect way to fuel up while exploring without slowing your sightseeing.

Slovenian Dining Experience

For a sit-down meal, try one of Ljubljana’s traditional restaurants. Balkan Grill, Gostilna As and Julija Restaurant are top picks for first-timers.

Must-try dishes include:

  • Kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage): Rich and savory, perfect with a slice of bread or sauerkraut. Locals often head to Klobasarna, a tiny spot in the old town, just for this specialty.
  • Beef tongue with horseradish: Thinly sliced and full of flavor, this Sunday favorite is served at places like Hiša Pod Gradom near the Central Market.
  • Pražen krompir: Golden, crispy potatoes sautéed with onions—a side dish that often steals the show at local meals.
  • Potica: A sweet pastry roll filled with walnut, poppy seed, or tarragon, beloved across Slovenia. You can enjoy it with a view at the Skyscraper café known as Nebotičnik.
  • Gibanica: Layers of pastry, cottage cheese, apples, and nuts come together in this rich dessert. If you have a sweet tooth, grab a slice at the Zvezda patisserie.
  • Ćevapčiči (or simply ćevap) are small, juicy grilled minced meat sausages—usually served with warm flatbread, chopped onions, and a creamy red pepper spread called ajvar. Balkan Grill is a great place to try them.

Dining in Ljubljana is about more than just food—it’s an experience that lets you connect with the local culture.

Where Locals Really Eat

To skip the tourist menus and dine like a local, aim for a traditional gostilna (local tavern) or a laid-back bistro. These are my favorite types of places in Ljubljana:

  • Gostilna Šestica: A longtime favorite serving classic Slovenian meals in a warm, homey atmosphere.
  • Slovenian House Figovec: Friendly service focuses on comfort food—the dumplings and lamb are especially popular.
  • Druga Violina: Not only do they serve great food (try the pražen krompir), but you also support a social enterprise employing people with special needs.
  • Izložba: The chef creates dishes based on the freshest finds at the farmer’s market, so every meal is a delightful surprise.

For more options, including some with modern twists on Slovenian classics, see this local’s restaurant guide to Ljubljana. Or consider joining a food tour to explore the city’s culinary highlights like a true insider.

Eat Like a Local at Markets

Markets are the beating heart of Ljubljana’s food culture. The two most notable are:

  • Central Market: This lively spot is where locals shop for fruit, flowers, honey, and mushrooms. The open-air stalls buzz with energy, especially on weekend mornings.
  • Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen): Every sunny Friday from spring through autumn, Pogačarjev trg fills with stands from top chefs and favorite restaurants. You can taste everything from traditional Slovenian dumplings to street food from around the globe—grab a plate, find a seat, and soak up the dynamic atmosphere.

Eating and drinking in Ljubljana is as much about the setting as the food itself—whether you’re sharing a market stall elbow-to-elbow with locals or relaxing at a riverside bar or a bistro. Eating like a local offers a true taste of Slovenia’s capital and is one of the most rewarding things to do when you’re there.

Where to Grab a Drink

Ljubljana is famous for its cozy cafes and charming riverside bars along the Ljubljanica River. Coffee culture here is vibrant, especially in the old town, with Italian-style espresso perfect for people-watching. When you’re in the mood for something stronger:

  • Sample a local craft beer at taprooms like Lajbah or Pivnica Union for a fun experience.
  • Taste Slovenian wine, especially the crisp whites often served by the glass in the city’s wine bars.
  • Enjoy the cocktails made perfectly

Dive Into Ljubljana’s Artistic and Alternative Scene

Ljubljana is full of surprises, but its vibrant creative spirit truly stands out. If you’re searching for unique things to do in Ljubljana beyond the usual museum visit or classic photo spot, the city’s flourishing art and alternative spaces are essential.

I love how graffiti-covered walls, painted courtyards, lively music venues, and quirky galleries coexist here.

Let’s explore the city’s cool side.

The City’s Best Spots for Street Art

Beyond Metelkova Mesto, street art can be found throughout Ljubljana if you know where to search. Here are my favorite spots for mural hunting:

  • Trubarjeva cesta: This lively street features colorful painted shop fronts and walls. Each visit reveals new surprises.
  • Under railway bridges: Old concrete walls and passageways here are splashed with vibrant, unexpected street art.
  • Near Rog Factory: Though the old bicycle factory has closed, the surrounding area remains alive with raw graffiti and offbeat installations.

Gallery Hopping: Where to Find Fresh Art

If murals aren’t quite your vibe and you prefer something more traditional or contemporary, Ljubljana’s galleries won’t disappoint. Scattered throughout the city, these galleries showcase a mix of Slovenian artists and cutting-edge creations.

Locals recommend:

  • Galerija Škuc: Located in the old town, this gallery features rotating exhibitions of both local and international artists. It has a laid-back atmosphere—far from the typical museum formality.
  • Mestna galerija Ljubljana: Dedicated to modern art, this space frequently highlights bold sculptures and experimental pieces by emerging talent.
  • Zala Gallery: Slightly hidden but well worth a visit, focusing on alternative and up-and-coming Slovenian artists.

Join a Tour or DIY Your Art Crawl

To truly feel Ljubljana’s creative energy, I recommend joining a themed Ljubljana walking tour. Groups like Alternative Ljubljana offer guided walks that focus on street art, subcultures, and even the city’s LGBTQ+ history.

These tours provide insider stories behind the art and tips on where local artists like to hang out.

If you prefer going solo, that’s easy too. Grab a coffee, wander between mural-covered streets and eclectic bars, and discover your own hidden surprises. Often, the best art moments in Ljubljana happen when you least expect them.

Nightlife With an Edge

As night falls, Ljubljana’s art scene shifts into a new rhythm. Many murals and installations glow under unique lighting, while live music fills the air from Metelkova Mesto’s clubs. Check out: Ljubljana Urban Art Scene.

You’ll find crowds heading to indie theaters and pop-up performances.

Exploring Ljubljana’s artistic and alternative scene means following your curiosity. Let the colorful walls, open studio doors, and welcoming local spots draw you in—you may discover a favorite memory tucked between murals or in a late-night jam session in Metelkova.

Day Trip to Lake Bled

Lake Bled - day trip from Ljubljana
The beautiful Lake Bled

It may not be in the city, but Lake Bled is so close and so stunning that it deserves a spot on this list. Just an hour from Ljubljana, this fairytale lake is famous for its island church, medieval castle perched on a cliff, and turquoise waters.

We spent a lovely day here. If you have the time, don’t miss it.

Rent a boat or take a traditional pletna to the island, ring the wishing bell in the church, then hike up to the castle for sweeping views. Or just take a lovely refreshing walk along the lake. It goes all the way around it.

Don’t leave without tasting the legendary Bled cream cake (kremšnita) at Café Park Bled—the perfect sweet ending to a magical day trip.

Conclusion

So there you have it. Ljubljana truly stands out as a relaxed and walkable city, making it easy to explore at your own pace.

Even as a first-time visitor, I found the best way to experience Ljubljana is to mix the well-known sights with more spontaneous moments—whether that’s wandering across a lively bridge, grabbing a snack at the market, or hanging out by the river alongside locals.

The city’s unhurried pace lets you savor both the big highlights and the small details. If you’re planning your itinerary, don’t miss out on some popular day trips from Ljubljana, like visiting Lake Bled, exploring Postojna Cave, or touring the impressive Predjama Castle—all excellent ways to experience more of Slovenia’s beauty beyond the capital.

So if you were wondering what to do in Ljubljana, I hope that’s been answered. If you get the chance, talk to locals; they’ll share stories, insider tips, and maybe a favorite restaurant or two that you won’t find in most guides.

I’d love to hear what stood out to you—leave a comment with your favorite things to do in Ljubljana or any advice for fellow travelers. Thanks for reading and sharing this little adventure with me.
